West of France is turned towards the Atlantic Coast. In the north Normandy Brittany have rolling hills, sandy beaches and quiet little harbour towns. Normandy Brittany have a more rugged coast and many neolithic sites. It has quite a distinct atmosphere from the rest of the country; you can still sense the Celtic origin of the region and its inhabitants.

The eastern part of France consists of the Alsace, Lorraine, Franche Comt?and Burgundy regions. The landscape has rolling hills and many beautiful cities, such as Metz, Strasbourg, Nancy and Dijon. This region produces many famous wines, including magnificent pinot noirs and chardonnays valued the world over, as well as the famous "Yellow wine" from the Jura mountain vineyard.

The Center of France is in many ways the most quiet part of France. But the great treasure of this region is the Loire valley , with many great castles and beautiful towns. Chartres with its famous cathedral and Tours rate among the most beautiful French cities.

In the South west of France the Dordogne is one of the most quintessential French regions. The valley is so pretty, the towns are so cute and the food is so good, that it is hard to believe that the people who live here go somewhere else for their holidays. The Languedoc has its own language and culture. In the south of the Languedoc you find the Pyrenees, a great mountain range separating France from Spain, where you can hike and ski. The towns of Toulouse and Montpellier are nice and the medieval town of Carcassone is a top destination.

French cuisine is extremely diverse, with only the Chinese having similar variety in their food. This variety is supported by the French passion for good food in all its forms, France's extraordinary range of different geographies and climates which support the local production of all types of ingredients, and France's long and varied history. In many ways, an understanding of the culture of French food is an understanding of France itself.

Meals range from the very basic, such as the traditional baguette plus cheese plus inexpensive wine, to very elaborate affairs than can involve a dozen courses and different wines consumed over several hours. Obviously, the latter type of dining is exceptional for most people. However, it is this more sophisticated dining which is typically found in "French restaurants" outside France, giving many forei gners the mistaken impression that French food is heavy and complicated. In fact, much of the French cuisine is fairly simple, relying on high quality fresh ingredients and loving preparation rather than complex recipes.

It is common in much of France to take a two hour break for lunch, with many working parents (particularly in villages and smaller towns) returning home for lunch. In some areas, mainly in the south of France, even longer lunch breaks are taken. Due to the long lunch break, businesses which close for this period typically reopen around 2PM or so and then stay open until about 7PM.

在法国的10大葡萄酒产区中，坐落于法国、瑞士边境的汝拉（Jura）酒区很是特别：这里不仅出产红葡萄酒和白葡萄酒，还出产一种黄颜色 的葡萄酒。当地人自豪地把这种色泽明亮、晶莹华贵的酒，称作酒瓶里的黄金。

汝拉小镇，在历史上曾长期臣属于强大的勃艮第公国，直到17世纪，才真正归入法国版图。古老的汝拉又有“侏罗”之称，因为在这里，人们不断地挖掘出许多恐龙化石。不过，让汝拉的声名大大显赫起来的，却还是它出产的黄酒。

白酒变成了黄酒

在汝拉，你能听到许多关于黄酒的传说，其中流传最广的是这样一个版本：中世纪时，有个贵族被征召当兵，一去6年。等到他回归故里，发现家中酒窖里陈酿着许多白葡萄酒。他打开橡木桶一看，这些酒早已由白色变成黄色的了，酒液上还浮着厚厚一层酵母。他叫来工人，要他把变了色的酒全部倒掉；谁知工人尝了一口，惊觉酒味远远胜过原来的白酒！于是偷偷把酒卖掉，发了一笔横财逃之夭夭。从此大家都知道了：窖酿3年的白葡萄酒，如果再多酿3年，便会变成色香味俱佳的黄酒。

汝拉的酿酒行家告诉我，酿造黄酒，葡萄采摘和发酵工艺都和白酒一样，但是酿造时间必须延长至少3年，而且葡萄品种要选用汝拉特有的Savagnar。另外，酿酒时，在橡木桶里只能存放三分之二酒液，必须留出空间让酵母和酒液互相作用。

1000瓶黄酒送宇航员

ARBOIS庄园是汝拉的望族，他们家族对汝拉酒区的最大贡献，就是让世界知道了汝拉黄酒。那是在上世纪50年代，前苏联宇航员成功“飞天”。为了纪念这一伟大事件，ARBOIS家族在汝拉举办了一个题为“月亮”的画展。来自世界各地的不少画家送来了作品。让ARBOIS家族意想不到的是，前苏联驻法国大使亲自送来了宇航员在太空中拍摄的月亮照片。

这幅真实的影画，理所当然地被评为一等奖，而奖品，便是ARBOIS家族送出的1000瓶黄酒。这条新闻在当时轰动了世界。如今，在莫斯科的俄罗斯太空基地里，依旧陈列着一瓶ARBOIS家族当年赠送的汝拉黄酒，酒的旁边放着那幅得奖作品“月球的背面”。

巴斯德酒标

汝拉人说起黄酒，都会情不自禁地提到巴斯德。这不仅仅是因为这位著名的生物学家出生在汝拉的缘故，更因为巴斯德有关酵母自我繁殖的理论，让汝拉人在酿制黄酒时得到了启发，极大地提升了黄酒的品质。

AlaindeLagviche先生的曾祖父和巴斯德是中学同学，巴斯德当年曾在他这位同学家的酒窖里做过酵母在空气作用下繁殖的试验。据说，当时巴斯德看到他们家酿在橡木桶里的酒装得满满的，便让倒掉三分之一。事实证明，这种让空气与酵母相互作用而酿出的黄酒，品质和色泽都是一流的。

现在，几乎所有的汝拉人都说，是巴斯德教会了他们酿制上乘的黄酒。在巴斯德诞生100周年时，汝拉的一些酒庄把他的头像印在酒标上———本来只是一种纪念，后来竟成了身价的体现：同样出产年份和品质的黄酒，只要贴上巴斯德酒标，便能多卖好几个欧元。
